Summertime Flats & Backcountry Fishing

And the living's easy.
July through September is a warm time of year for the Florida Keys. Beat the heat by hitting the water early, a great time of year to take advantage of the 1/2 and 3/4 day charter.

Conditions are typically very calm this time of year, anglers can expect to encounter early morning tarpon and bonefish in a tailing depth of water before noon.

If only views like this lasted all day. The golden hour surrounding sunrise is when the magic happens this time of year. Push off the dock with starlight overhead, navigate the backcountry out and be fishing with this view. When conditions are flat calm this time of day, spotting that gamefish tail piercing the surface is never easier. Watch for rolling tarpon and bonefish push through a foot of water, make an accurate cast and watch the take. You'll want to book two days just to witness this time of day twice.

Summer months are best for bonefish in the Florida Keys. If you're looking to catch this fish then hit the shallows this time of year for multiple shots. Bonefish are considered challenging fish to catch, but put that cast on the money and watch this aggressive feeder rip line off your reel. Known as the gray-ghost, bonefish are perfectly suited for their surrounding environment and tough to see. Knowing what to look for and more importantly where, is key to success. By this time of year 90% of the large size tarpon have moved on, leaving behind the resident 10-30 pound juvenile tarpon. That's right a 20 pound tarpon is considered juvenile. Catching these guys is just as fun as their larger counterparts, and you won't beat yourself up doing it. Best fishing occurs early during the day, great for the fly rod as the bite is fantastic this time of year. Read more about tarpon fishing
