Florida Keys Fall Flats Fishing

A transitional fishing season
October and November bring seasonal change to the FL Keys flats & backcountry. Much like spring, that sweet spot in water temperature between hot and cold comes back around for another chance at gamefish greatness.

Anglers can expect mild air temperatures and good fishing for permit, juvenile tarpon, bonefish, redfish and barracuda. Moderate wind-speeds and occasional cloudiness makes this a good time of year for light-tackle spin fishing.

When permit are making an appearance on the flats, it's hard taking time to target any other fish. The mild water temperatures surrounding October bring permit back into the shallows for another go before winter sets in. This is a great time of year to invest some time on the flats sight-fishing for permit. Read more about permit fishing

Big Bonefish on the Flats

October through November produces some of the largest bonefish witnessed all year. Not quite the quantity seen during the summer months, almost as if the larger specimens are last to leave before winter water temps roll in.

Size does matter when talking bonefish. The larger they are, the harder they run. A 5+ pound bonefish will have you guessing whether you're gonna run out of line or not. Read more about bonefishing

These are the last months during the year we get to target the silver king. Rather the silver prince, most all the larger migratory size tarpon have moved on by now leaving behind the 10-30 pound size fish. The shallows cool to an ideal temperature during these months, allowing for a good window of tarpon opportunity. Read more about tarpon flats fishing.

Try and retrieve that lure back to the boat before this toothy critter smashes it. The Cuda is always there when itching for a tug during the fall months. An underrated gamefish, the barracuda might just keep you coming back for more once witnessed. Read more about barracuda flats fishing

Get up close and personal with red mangrove shorelines while sight-fishing for redfish this time of year. This is always a favorite go to for a fun flats fishing experience. While catching redfish is always a blast, finding them in their ultra-shallow water environment is awesome. Watch as they move in and out of interlocking mangrove roots and make an accurate cast when you can. Read more about sight-fishing redfish.
